Printing
RIPs
A Raster Image Processor is basically like a high-end printer driver. It gives the user more complete control over every aspect of color and density in the printer. In a commercial lab, it can also be used for simplifying large scale production tasks like queueing jobs from multiple users and stacking multiple images onto a large roll of paper.
Digital Photographic Printers
Use lasers instead of an enlarger to expose regular photographic paper. Paper is then developed and processed as usual. Restricted to traditional photographic paper types. Printers I use at commercial labs include the following:
Inkjet Photo Printers
Sprays very tiny droplets of ink on a variety of papers types. "Photo quality" inkjet printers usually use much smaller droplets of ink in order to make the prints appear like photographic paper. Can also be used to print on watercolor paper, canvas and a variety of other media types. Sometimes called gicle'e.
